Update: I feel so cheated. This is an April Fools’ joke being posted ahead of time, since it’s technically April 1st in Japan now. That’ll teach me to let my guard down.

Original Story: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is being updated with dating-sim elements. Square Enix are adding something dubbed the “Favour” system to the game, and say that this allows adventurers to “grow even closer to their favourite NPCs”.

The Favour system will pertain to both male and female NPCs. The image above (click to enlarge) outlines how the system will work. The summary reads: “To cater to our players’ desire to develop more intimate relations with their favourite NPCs, we would like to propose the addition of a new parameter called ‘Favour.’”

“Each NPC will have an internal Favour value, which will rise and fall based on the player’s actions. By raising an NPCs’s Favour to certain levels, the player can trigger special events with said NPC. NPCs will also have preferences in appearance. To Unlock Favour with a certain NPC, the player’s character must have the right combination of race, gender and physical traits.”

Above is a screenshot of a player character working his charm on Y’shtola, who has no racial preference, but requires that the character be intellectual. Her favourite item is Leg armour in the form of boots. Once you’ve wooed her, you can indulge in a… tail-catching mini-game.

More information on the Favour system will be made available soon, Square say.
