Tokyo Majin Gakuen series director Shuuhou Imai recently revealed that he’ll be announcing a new Nintendo 3DS game. In his latest blog post, he reveals that the game is Hamatora: Look at Smoking World, which he’ll be making with Unchained Blades developers, FuRyu.
Imai mentions in his blog post that Hamatora won’t take place in a parallel world from Hamatora: The Animation or the manga version—it will actually take place in the same world, but will have a different story. He reassures readers that the game will be enjoyable to those who’ve yet to see the anime or read the manga.
Imai says he was inspired by the shared universe concept often seen in American comics, where works of different titles, for example the DC and Marvel Universe, can take place in the same world. That being said, there might be a possibility of seeing characters from the Tokyo Majin Gakuen series in Hamatora, but for the time being, the only thing we know that’s shared is the world between Hamatora’s anime and manga.
Hamatora: Look at Smoking World is set in a port town of Kobe, Japan, where the transfer student protagonist who suddenly has his special powers awakened participates in fights with other high school students.
The characters will all be original to the game, and Imai even got in touch with people from the Kobe film office and visited other parts of Kobe, which will be included in the game.
You’ll be seeing certain shopping districts modeled after real-life areas, which you’ll be able to see in stereoscopic 3D. That sounds a little bit games like Shin Megami Tensei or Akiba’s Trip that make an effort to model themselves after the real-life locales they take place in.
According to Imai, the battle system for the game won’t be anything like Tokyo Twilight Ghosthunters, but it’ll be closer to the Tokyo Majin Gakuen series, which uses a strategy RPG battle system.
Hamatora: Look at Smoking World will be released on July 17th, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS. Here’s a commercial for the game:
