Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime told us that the Year of Luigi would extend into 2014, and it looks like he meant it. This morning, we got a first look at Dr. Luigi for Wii U during Nintendo Direct.
Dr. Luigi is similar to the classic Dr. Mario game, but with four different modes. In addition to having the Retro Remedy mode and its classic controls, there will be a newer “Operation L” mode, which is similar to the original game, but with L-shaped capsules.
There’s also a competitive versus mode, where you’ll get to play against a friend or random players via online battle. Dr. Luigi brings a new strategic element to the puzzle game, by allowing you to punish opponents by changing their capsule colors upon killing germs on your side.
The Germ Buster mode, which was featured on Brain Age on the Nintendo DS, will also be making a return in this game. This mode uses basic capsules and touch-screen controls with the Wii U GamePad, and is recommended for novice players.
Dr. Luigi is scheduled for release on December 31 in North America through the Wii U eShop. It will cost $14.99. Meanwhile, Europe will get the game on January 15th, 2014.
