Many have made comparisons between Sonic Lost World and Sonic X-treme. The former is the latest release to star Sega’s spiky mascot. The latter was designed to be his original debut in the 3D space for the Sega Saturn, but was cancelled for a variety of reasons.

Some wondered if Sonic Lost World is an homage to Sonic X-treme, while others believe that there is no connection whatsoever. Siliconera asked Takashi Iizuka, the man in charge of Sonic Team, what the deal was. He replied:

“The viewpoint is based upon the idea of expanding the forward view, because the sight lines have sometimes been limited, resulting in hindered gameplay. With the change, the new routes are possible, which expands gameplay. So that’s the point of the game itself.

Actually, no one in the team, except myself, are even aware of Sonic X-treme’s existence. So it’s just a coincidence.”

Sonic Lost World will be available in 2013 for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
