Ninja Gaiden spin-off YAIBA: Ninja Gaiden Z is set in Ukraine, comcept’s Keiji Inafune and Team Ninja’s Yosuke Hayashi revealed in a developer diary video shared today. The location, Inafune shared, was chosen based on the idea of a zombie outbreak.

“A zombie outbreak has to start somewhere,” Inafune says. “When we were thinking of where to set it, we wanted something that worked with the idea of using zombies as weapons. We wanted some place we weren’t familiar with and we decided on Ukraine.”

Hayashi mentions that the idea to set the game in Ukraine came from the game’s development team, Spark Unlimited. However, Inafune adds: “Well, it starts in Ukraine. We don’t know where it ends.”
