At GDC, I met with Breadbros Games at the Media Indie Exchange who has been working on a comical JRPG called Sully: A Very Serious RPG. The developer explained the map was inspired by Phantasy Star IV, but the game uses a Final Fantasy style battle system. What was interesting was when Ben talked about designing a role playing game for adults. Instead of talking about so-called "mature" content like violence, Ben mentioned how adults have less time to play games and he tackled this problem in an interesting way.
If you want to focus on exploring Sully: A Very Serious RPG lets players turn battles with small fry enemies off and go straight to boss battles. The game will automatically level players up too. Of course, if you have time to for a full RPG you can learn skills like opening the Gates of Heck.
Sully: Avery Serious RPG will be available for PC, Mac, Linux, and Vita this summer for $9.99.
