<< Last week’s software sales chart
Last week’s big release in Japan was—wait for it—Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Square Enix took on publishing duties for Activision once again, and the subtitled version of the game (dubbed versions are released later) sold 197,350 copies on the PlayStation. Meanwhile, it sold an additional 22,177 copies on the Xbox 360.
That’s a high debut for Call of Duty. For comparison, last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 180,372 copies on the PlayStation 3 in its first week. On the Xbox 360, it sold 30,467 copies. Tallying up total sales, Black Ops 2 wins out by around 10,000 copies, and was also the highest-selling new release of the week.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s success may have come at the cost of Capcom’s E.X. Troopers, which was released last week as well. E.X. Troopers sold a mere 17,402 copies on the Nintendo 3DS and an even lesser 8,717 copies on the PlayStation 3. Perhaps sending it out alongside the most popular shooter in the world wasn’t such a hot idea.
In other news, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagate and the Infinite Labyrinth saw its release last week, too, and so did the PlayStation 3 port of Hot Shots: World Invitational. The latter outsold its PlayStation Vita counterpart.
Finally, one last point of interest—Bravely Default: Flying Fairy looks like it’s about to slip out of the top-20, and we may or may not see it come back up during the upcoming holidays. That having been said, at the rate it’s selling, it should easily cross 300,000 copies sold at retail in January, if not sooner. That’s an admirable achievement for a brand new role-playing franchise.
