Square Enix/United Front’s Hong Kong crime drama, Sleeping Dogs, and Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. 2 were both released on the same day in Europe—August 17th.

While New Super Mario Bros. 2 opened at the #2 spot on the weekly U.K. games charts provided by Chart Track, the game’s first week sales at retail were actually beaten by Sleeping Dogs, which managed to grab the #1 spot.

Of course, it needs to be noted that Sleeping Dogs is a multi-platform game available on three different platforms (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3), while New Super Mario Bros. 2 is only available on the Nintendo 3DS.

Regardless, that’s a nice piece of news to hear about a new I.P. like Sleeping Dogs, which was cancelled under its original publisher, Activision, back when the game was titled True Crime: Hong Kong. Following its cancellation, Square Enix picked the game up, and allowed developer, United Front Games, to complete development.
