How Sega Created Bosses For The House Of The Dead 4

"In the House of the Dead series, all of the boss’ names are inspired by Tarot cards," a Sega team member said looking back at the development of The House of the Dead 4. Sega’s zombie shooting game comes home this week as a PlayStation Network download. "For example, the name of the stage four boss, Temperance, literally means ‘restrict from something.’  We came to the idea that if you did not restrict food you would become overweight, which led to the design."

Unlike other bosses, Temperance follows players throughout Chapter 4. You have to keep it at bay by blasting it with machine gun fire or it’ll roll on top of you.

"From this initial profile, we created a suitable attack method for this large body type—rolling.  We also made full use of the game’s unique force feedback system with Temperance. Overall, we tried to make each boss encounter a unique experience for the player."

The House of the Dead 4 also has a giant tarantula that terrorizes players on a rickety elevator and a chainsaw wielding maniac that cuts up subway trains for you to takedown.
