Then you would have something like Aztez, an upcoming black & white beat ’em up in development for PC and Mac. I got to see a build of Aztez and try its combo system where you can send enemies flying using a mix of heavy and light attacks. The Aztec warrior you play as can also launch enemies in the air and just like other action games you can continue a combo in the sky. Actually, you can try the combo system too. Here’s a much earlier build.

What makes Aztez standout is everything you can’t see. Instead of automatically moving to the next area, Aztez has a Fire Emblem-like world map and you choose which area you want to conquer. After you pick a spot, the game switches back into a 2D beat ’em up so you can cut through another group of troops. Blending strategy game elements with a traditional beat ’em up is an interesting idea. While I moved from place to place, I didn’t get to plan my assault and see how deep the system is.

It would probably change though since Aztez won’t be ready until 2013 when the game is ready for Steam.
