Last week, we reported that Square Enix’s Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy will be the first Nintendo 3DS game to offer additional download content, but we weren’t sure if it would be free or paid.

Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, confirms that this is indeed the case. Theatrhythm, a beat-tapping rhythm game that uses Final Fantasy music, characters and settings, will offer downloadable songs that Square Enix will sell over the Nintendo Network.

Iwata specifically uses the word “sold,” which would imply that the additional content will need to be paid for.

As far as downloadable content for first-party titles goes, while Nintendo will offer DLC for their own games, Iwata is keen to point out that this shouldn’t in any way be compared to social games on mobile phones, where consumers end up spending a huge amount of money as a result of repeat payments for various items.

“As a software maker, Nintendo believes that its packaged software should be sold to our consumers in a form so that the consumers will know in advance that they can enjoy playing the software they purchased just as it is,” Iwata said to investors.
