While Super Mario 3D Land is doing well, strictly 2D side-scrolling Mario games are among Nintendo’s biggest sellers. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (above), for instance, has sold over 25 million copies worldwide since its release.

And New Super Mario Bros. on DS? That’s at over 28 million. Not surprising, then, that Nintendo are keen to develop another one of these games.

At Nintendo’s latest financial results briefing this evening, Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, announced that “totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D” will be released for the Nintendo 3DS in the company’s next fiscal year.

That puts it at somewhere between April 2012 and March 2013. The game’s official title hasn’t been announced yet.
