The Historia Crux system should make Final Fantasy XIII-2 less linear than its predecessor. Serah and Noel have to track down Artefacts with Mog’s help to open time gates. Areas in Final Fantasy XIII-2 change depending on when you’re exploring them.

Isn’t time travel a trope for Chrono Trigger, you say? Well, yes, but Final Fantasy Legend III before it (OK that was technically a SaGa game) and the very first Final Fantasy made time travel a central to the story.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 comes out on January 31 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
