Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance reemerged this weekend at the VGAs as a PlatinumGames developed title. The game’s original name was Metal Gear Solid Rising, but don’t call it that!
Over Twitter, producer Hideo Kojima says he changed the title to Metal Gear Rising because he wanted to create a new protagonist, Raiden, and shake off the feeling this was a Metal Gear Solid spin-off. Kojima Productions was designing the game, but Kojima wondered if it was possible for him to develop such a game. The Kojima Productions staff insisted it had to be his vision of Metal Gear. If Rising were completed, Kojima believes people would feel Rising wasn’t a Metal Gear title.
When development changed hands to PlatinumGames, Kojima told the team he wants Raiden to run smoothly in 60 frames per second. The version of Rising developed by Kojima Productions was running at 30 frames per second and had the style of Metal Gear game. The new Rising has a different color palette and atmosphere.
Kojima says the concept of "cut everything" is still in Metal Gear Rising. The old version of the game let players chop up objects in the background while the new Rising lets players cut objects and enemies anywhere at anytime. Tomorrow, Kojima will reveal an interview that explains what happened to Metal Gear Rising. That’s a screen cap of the video, shared by Kojima, above.
