Gargoyle’s Quest has RPG elements, but it’s more of an action game. The Sword of Hope is a first person perspective RPG and it’s coming to Japan’s 3DS Virtual Console next week. Kemco, it seems, reused their interface from the NES version of Shadowgate for The Sword of Hope. Both games have static graphics in the top left and commands for look, magic, and use plus a mini-map on the bottom of the screen.

The Sword of Hope squeezes battles in too with text descriptions of the actions similar to Dragon Quest. The story follows Prince Theo as he tries to overthrow his father King Hennessy from ruling his kingdom like a madman. While the game’s title is The Sword of Hope (spoiler alert!), magic is much more powerful than the legendary blade you find.

Kemco localized The Sword of Hope and its sequel for North America, which makes both titles Virtual Console candidates for the States.
