Some of you may recall that we’ve mentioned a Japanese show named Pokémon Sunday on Siliconera a couple of times in the past.

Pokémon Sunday was a variety show covering all aspects of the franchise, that aired on the TV Tokyo network in Japan. A successor to that show, Pokémon Smash, has taken its place as of last year.

The next episode of Pokémon Smash will reportedly feature a “massive shock announcement” from Game Freak’s Pokémon director, Junichi Masuda, according to a report at Serebii.net. No other details have been hinted at, such as whether this involves the reveal of a new monster or a new game.

Before you get your hopes too high for another mainline Pokémon RPG on 3DS, though, keep in mind the comments made by the Pokémon Company’s president, Tsunekazu Ishihara, earlier this year in Famitsu magazine.

Ishihara promised back in July that new Pokémon announcements would be made before the end of the year, but that they would pertain to both Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS owners. One of the 3DS-specific possibilities mentioned was an expansion to Pokédex 3D, to include monsters from games other than Black/White.

Also note that, If this is indeed a “massive shock announcement,” and that it pertains to a new game, there’s a good chance we’ll at least see it mentioned at Nintendo’s 3DS press conference on September 13th.
