There have been questions as to how Capcom went about selecting characters for inclusion in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and while that process will likely never be made entirely transparent, we do have answers for why certain characters didn’t make the cut.
During an “Ask Capcom” video Q&A conducted at Comic-Con last month, Capcom’s Christian Svensson’s commented on Gene (God Hand), Venom (Spider-Man) and Cyclops (X-Men), and why they aren’t in the game.
“Gene was actually in very close consideration,” Svensson shared about God Hand’s lead character. Svensson went on to say that Gene was in the pool of potential characters that Capcom wanted to include, provided time allowed for it, but that he didn’t “make the final cut”.
Cyclops was a simpler case to explain, as he was never on the list of potential characters at all. Finally, Venom’s exclusion from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was Marvel’s decision.
“Venom, unfortunately, was amongst a list of characters that were not available for us to use on Marvel’s side,” Svensson revealed. “I couldn’t tell you the reason for why that is…you’d have to ask Marvel. But Venom was never an option.”
Svensson explained that, while he can’t say why, some characters were included because Marvel specifically wanted them in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, based on other activities even outside the realm of video games. “I don’t want to put words in Marvel’s mouth, but they had very specific reasons why they wanted a couple of the characters that they wanted in there,” he shared.
