Speaking at a Tales producer talk event, Hideo Baba said players pick their starting protagonist. You can select Jude, the teenage medical school student who is on a secret mission, or Milla, the spirit magic user who is determined to protect the world.
The opening of Tales of Xillia changes depending on which character you select. Baba assured that this decision will not have any great change for the overall story, but this allows players to beginning from the perspective of both lead characters. Which one would Baba start with? Milla, he answered, but he said there is no special meaning to this decision.
Where did "Xillia" come from? Baba says it’s derived from million and billion, in English. He wanted to have a huge number and started with "Xillion" which eventually was changed to Xillia. The significance is within a persons life there are many events and encounters with people.
Tales of Xillia is scheduled for release this year on PlayStation 3.
